This NCO school was specifically designed to replace squad leaders and to recon with 4-man patrols in Viet Nam; I was to replace Sgt Peter Mueller. Unfortunately, before Sgt Mueller was scheduled to leave, he was badly wounded on May 8th, and was sent to the hospital in Japan. I took over Peter's squad at that time. I am interested in making contact with any of those who were in his squad. | | | | | |

He passed away February 13, 2009 from complications stemming from Agent Orange exposure amongst other things. We are attempting to find information regarding the seven Bronze Stars, Silver and Vietnam Metal he received. My siblings and I are trying to find out what were the reasons surrounding his receipt of these medals. Our father didn’t talk much about the Viet Nam War. We would like to past this history onto our children so they can understand the military life. We know that he was in Viet Nam in ‘66 to ‘67 and again ‘69 to ‘70. If someone could help direct us to the best place to find out this information, it would be most appreciated. In the Red Warrior records we did see where in June of 1967 it indicated that our father took over Alpha Company as the First Sergeant replacing First Sergeant Robert E. Crouch. We do know that he served in 1st Battalion.
Thanking you in advance for any feedback you can provide. My father loved the Army, he served 21 years proudly. Thank you as well for your service. Respectfully submitted by the children of Sergeant Major Roy D. Chandler.

| | Date: | 11/3/2011 4:42:27 PM | | Subject: | June 5,1969 Battle Report | | | I would like to thank Larry Boyd for his unbelievably thorough recollection of this major event. I arrived in Polei Kleng on June 17, 1968 to join Charlie company 1/12th and spent my entire time in 3/3 of that unit. I left the field on June 11,1969 and derosed out of Vietnam two days later. I have hundreds of photos and countless memories of the great men I served with but for some unknown reason my mind goes blank after May 28, 1969. When I arrived at the airstrip for the chopper flight to Camp Enari I passed dozens of fresh young faces on the way to the bush. When I inquired as to where they were going they stated Bravo and Charlie companies 1/12th. From my appearence I know the realization finally hit them what they were really getting into. My advice to them was that they were going to meet some men out there that were going to change their view on life forever. "Stay in the shadows of those that have been out there the longest and you'll learn from them why they are still alive today." Thank you again to Larry Boyd for the very difficult feats he performed both on and off the battlefield. To all my Red Warrior brothers and their families I hope the beauty found in this world has rightfully reached into your lives.

| | Date: | 9/29/2011 1:15:46 AM | | Subject: | They never said that I would possibly have PTSD | | | In all my training in Boot Camp, AIT and Jump School, NO ONE ever said that I would quite possibly have PTSD from the Vietnam War!! I was with E Company (Recon) 1/12th Infantry from May '69 to April '70. As some of you know, a Recon Platoon was a small group of guys. We had as many as 35-40 individuals in my Platoon, and as little as 25. We could "Recon" areas very quietly, as opposed to the noise that a Company made moving through the bush with double and triple canopy jungle all around! We had walked right up on a couple of dinks once sitting on a log smoking and obviously taking a break and talking real low. Our point man that particular day was a small black guy(Can't remember his name) Anyway, as the point came around a corner on this trail he was literally 10 feet from those bad guys! He opened up as they started dedeeing down a finger, and a few of our guys moved up the column and killed one of them. We followed the others Ho Chi Mihn sandals down the finger and discovered an NVA/Viet Cong hospital or training area under triple canopy jungle that had obviously been there a while! They had split bamboo used for diverting water from a nearby river, and chickens and little pigs running around. Also one hootch had some smoke coming from it, so someone had just been there, but everyone had left except for a sniper! After the LT called all the squad leaders over to a small clearing by another hootch the sniper opens up with an M-16. One of our squad leaders gets shot right in the flat side of those old steel pots we used to wear and the bullet zips around the helmet liner and comes out not hitting the squad leader. His steel pot had a hole in it about 2" in diameter! I've often wondered if he kept that steel pot. Anyway, I really wanted to talk about my appeal, so I'll put that last. I was told today that VA is way behind on claims, so I imagine it will be about another month before I hear anything. Right now I'm at 50%. Take it easy everyone. Until next time, Vincent | | | | | |
