Tentatively identified as a Red Warrior Janowski
December 2010 brought a picture to our attention from Red Warrior Melvin Deutsch, MD, which shows a man he remembers by the name of Janowski. Janowski is not listed in our current Roster, and we have no first name, but Doc Deutsch verifies he was a member of the battalion. In Doc's photograph, the picture strongly resembles Janowski. Look the hairline, the strong jaw. Thus, until proven otherwise, we'll recognize this daring GI as Janowski in the heat of battle.
This photograph was taken with a good old Kodak Instamatic camera by Dennis Witt of Charlie Company, 15 Feb., 1967 during the battle of Hill 501N.
During battle, our Red Warrior (Janowski) ran out to the edge of the perimeter and retrieved this NVA RPG. The story Witt recalls was that someone in the bunker next to his had spotted a NVA soldier with a RPG. He took aim, shot, and felled the enemy. Fearful that the NVA would use the weapon against them, a decision was made to retrieve the RPG. From the bunker next to Witt's location, a yell burst out, warning that a man was going outside of the perimeter. It was just time enough for Witt to retrieve his camera and take this picture as the man scrambled back to his bunker. A daring feat for sure! Witt says he doesn't know if this man volunteered, or got the short straw. In any case, it's a dramatic picture and we need to find out who this guy is.
Witt believes this man was a member of Charlie Company, but he's not positive. He was obviously there during the Feb. 1967 timeframe. We are not sure of the platoon. If you know this man, Email The Unknown Soldier and let us know! He may just want a copy of this as a memento for his daring! One gutsy grunt!
